Did you know you can grow fresh salad greens throughout the winter with no lights, no greenhouse, and little more than a cupboard and a windowsill?
Lee Olson and will teach you how to grow sprouted seeds in soil, employing a method that encourages a long stem without expansive roots and provides delicious, healthy salad greens in less than ten days at a fraction of the cost of buying them at the market.
This workshop on Wednesday, February 22 from 6:30 - 8 p.m. at the WACPAC (161 Snelling Ave. N.) will have first-time and experienced gardeners discovering the fun and productive world of indoor salad gardening.

Starting on January 16th new 64-gallon recycling carts with wheels and lids replaced blue bins. Cardboard food containers, refrigerated boxes, and cardboard tubes will be accepted in the single-sort recycling carts.
For addresses within Union Park, recycling pickup has changed to Monday. If you have access to an alley, your recycling will be collected from the alley. Residents without alley access will put their recycling cart out at the curb.
Starting in April, if you would like to try a smaller (32-gallon) or larger (95-gallon) cart you may request a switch by calling Eureka Recycling at 651-222-7678. One switch will be allowed at no charge. Visit stpaul.gov/recycle for frequently asked questions and more information.

Connect with your neighbors about waste reduction in the community, ask questions about the upcoming changes to the recycling program in Saint Paul, turn in unwanted old blue recycling bins, see the screening of Story of a Cereal Box, and enjoy local food and beverage from Trotter's Cafe and Cahoots. Every year, we recognize three outstanding community members or groups from the Union Park community as part of the citywide Neighborhood Honor Roll Celebration. Everyone is welcome to attend the celebration being held on January 27 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the University of St. Thomas in the Anderson Student Center’s Woulfe Hall.
This year Union Park District Council honors:
Eli’s Sons are local public figures otherwise known as David Skinner and Dale Gruber. They love bringing joy to people by combining music, laughter, and community. They have generously volunteered their time and resources to provide all of the music for Union Park’s annual Ice Cream, Peanut Butter & Jam event in Merriam Park. They book bands, set up, operate equipment, handle promotions, play amazing family-friendly music, and bring incredible positive energy to the event.
Scott Banas has offered his neighborhood knowledge, legal expertise, and mediation skills to the community for over fifteen years. He served as president of the Merriam Park Community Council, and played a key role in the merger of three community councils into Union Park a decade ago. He also worked on the complex negotiations over the University of St. Thomas conditional use permit, and has served as a watchdog for residents on a number of campus/community issues.
James Ebert is a professional photographer who has volunteered countless hours of his time and talent to shoot, edit, and share photographs of Union Park community events, businesses, and residents. His high quality photographs have enhanced the district council’s communication efforts and highlighted issues of importance in the community. His photos are featured prominently on our website, in our office, and throughout our recently approved ten-year community plan.

You are invited to celebrate the reincarnation of Hague Avenue’'s Goddess Tree on January 19th from 7 - 9 p.m. at the WACPAC at 161 Snelling Ave. The old Elm tree at the corner of Hague and Pierce, painted by Hend Al-Mansour, now resides at the WACPAC. Pianist Ora Itkin, Saed Kakish of Cahoots, and the Cadenza music folks will celebrate with us its coming back to life. Join us for an evening of live music, dance, and refreshment.
Would you like to learn more about development projects going on in our community, and have a chance to influence them? From liquor licenses to affordable housing projects, our Committee on Land Use and Economic Development addresses what's happening in Union Park. This month's October 17 meeting will focus on the city's proposal to rezone parts of Snelling (and the three blocks of Selby adjacent to Snelling) to encourage higher density mixed-use development in areas currently zoned for businesses and multiunit housing. Starting on Monday, May 16, you may have notice some changes at the intersection of Fairview and Marshall Avenues. The Friendly Streets Initiative has been working with neighbors to install temporary bumpouts, creative painted crosswalks, and other measures intended to improve the intersection for all users. You can read more on the background of the painted crosswalk -- the first of its kind in Saint Paul -- in this MinnPost article.
Part of their larger Fairview Avenue and Better Bridges projects, this demonstration implements feedback from the community, allowing neighbors to experience some of their ideas in action. Let us know what you think!
Our barricades are available on a first come, first served basis to residents who have already applied for a block party permit through the City of Saint Paul. Our barricades are approved for block party use, but are smaller than the City’s, so they are not appropriate adjacent to higher traffic streets. A $40 fee and a $80 refundable deposit are required.
Please plan to pay when you receive the barricades in cash or with two separate checks made out to UPDC. The $80 deposit will be returned when you return the barricades. (The city charges $143 for their barricades with the exception of National Night Out).
