Home > Our Community > Neighborhoods Many Neighborhoods, One Community Union Park is an area of Saint Paul between the Mississippi River and Lexington Avenue, and University and Summit Avenues, including the Merriam Park, Snelling-Hamline, and Lexington-Hamline neighborhoods. Those three neighborhood councils merged in 2007 to form the Union Park District Council, which is one of 17 planning councils in the city of Saint Paul. Although the city has prescribed the makeup of the Union Park District Council, many people within our community strongly identify as members of a particular smaller neighborhood. This longstanding neighborhood loyalty is one of the things that make our community great. - Community Gardens | Union Park
Home > Our Community > Community Gardens Community Gardens Merriam Station Community Garden The Merriam Station Community Gardeners have actively transformed a previously neglected tract of land into a true community treasure. They have made affordable garden plots readily available to a diverse group of gardeners, and have promoted the growth and consumption of fresh organic food throughout our neighborhoods. This valued community asset benefits not only its membership but the broader community through contributions to a local food shelf, educational opportunities, and engaging events, and increased public safety. Merriam Station Community Garden is located on a Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) right-of-way along Gilbert Avenue just north of I-94 and just west of Prior Avenue. Learn More about Merriam Station Commmunity Garden . Eleanor Graham Community Garden The Eleanor Graham Community Garden was established in 1981 on land leased from St. Paul Public Works and is being enhanced year by year. Staying true to its original vision, about half of the plots are rented by neighborhood apartment dwellers. Full size plots (20x15 ft) rent for $40 annually and half-plots (10x15 ft) for $20. Gardeners are required to volunteer two hours per month to maintain Garden common areas: flower beds, native pollinator habitat, compost bins, food shelf plots, and lawn space. The Garden is also home to two ancient bur oak trees, an orchard, and honeybee hives. Eleanor Graham Community Garden is located on the triangle formed by Hamline Avenue, Ashland Avenue, and Ayd Mill Road. Most gardeners bike or walk to the garden, but street parking is close by. A broad footpath under the Hamline Bridge at Laurel Avenue permits access without having to cross Hamline. A bicycle/pedestrian path now runs along the Garden’s southern perimeter to provide access to the new off-street bicycle/pedestrian trail along Ayd Mill Road. How the park got its name At our board meeting on January 3 2018 the community heard a presentation about the voting process to select the name for the future park at Griggs . The presentation outlined the top names that came out of the balloting at each location. After the presentation, our Board vote unanimously to endorse Peace as a possible name. Then the board voted to also reccommend Unity which received the second highest number of votes. Midway received the third highest amount of votes. The Saint Paul Parks and Recreation Commission voted to make the name Midway Peace Park, recognizing the common geographic name for the area as well as the inspirational word peace. In March 2018 Saint Paul City Council endorsed Midway Peace Park as the name for the future park. 512 people cast their ballot for their favorite two names from the final selection of five: Peace Park People think of the word "Peace" as being inspirational, calming, and a way to bring people together across cultures. “It is universal...We need it to live our lives. It makes everything better.” Midway Park Midway is a popular name for the area. For many, it fosters a strong sense of belonging and pride. “I am Midway proud. I’ve lived here my whole life and it is the name of this area.” Mosaic Park Many people want the park to celebrate the diversity of the area through art. The word "Mosaic" reflects both the mosaic of cultures in the area and inspires art for the space. “It is about coming together to form something beautiful...It celebrates our diversity.” Tiwahe Park "Tiwahe" is the Dakota word for immediate family -- the people you are dwelling with. This name honors the Daktoa people who first inhabited the area. “It is about people coming together...I like the idea of a Native American name because they need more representation.” Unity Park "Unity Park" represents coming together across cultures into one community. “Because it is everyone's park and we all need a place to come together… It is diverse, neutral, universal, and for the community.” Here are two articles on the park: A new St. Paul park is on the verge of reality, thanks to the work of a committed neighborhood St. Paul, Trust for Public Land buy property for new park in Midway neighborhood < Previous Project Next Project >
